Position Title

Intern

Purpose

The Public Relations Intern will have a unique opportunity to learn about non-profit public affairs through hands-on activities and exposure to a wide range of departmental activities and projects, including disaster response, special events and program areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Willingness to support Red Cross Mission
  • Creation of Press Kits
  • Opportunities to review and draft press releases
  • Chance to accompany PR staff to disasters and special events to gain first-hand experience in handling media requests and appearances.
  • Take photos at activities with digital and/or still cameras.
  • Help staff with organization and filing of photo archives
  • Assist with design and copy for chapter brochures, displays, and publicity materials
  • Depending on time of year, involvement in planning and execution of media and publicity goals for special events.
  • Assistance with tracking media mentions and other tasks as assigned

Reports to Public Relations Manager

Qualifications

  • MS Word, basic Adobe PageMaker and Photoshop, Internet navigation and resources.
  • Desktop publishing
  • Written and verbal communication
  • Must be able to work flexible hours
  • Show attention to detail and organization
  • Exhibit interest in the mission of the American Red Cross and non-profit organizations
  • Able to work with diverse populations

  • Orientation to American Red Cross
  • On job training

Public Relations Manager

Time Commitment

  • 10-20 hours a week, depending on needs of intern (credit requirements, etc)
  • Shifts should be minimum of 3 hours during regular office hours, 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday
  • Occasional night and weekend work may be required (will schedule in advance)
  • May required long periods of standing and walking, especially at disaster scenes
