On-Call Public Affairs Volunteer |
Purpose |
Seeking person interested in public relations or communications to support chapter disaster relief functions by communicating key information to various audiences, including victims and their families, the media and the community. |
Key Responsibilities |
- Willingness to support Red Cross Mission
- Being on call during a designated time period each month for emergency disaster public affairs.
- Contacting local media with disaster relief information and serving as a spokesperson.
- Coordinating media relations and supporting public affairs related functions at disaster scenes.
- Distributing relief information to victims during local disasters
- Supporting training efforts of new volunteers by participating in mock disasters.
- Providing a written report of all incidents to Communication and Marketing Department after a disaster.
- Volunteers who are on call should be available to respond to emergency calls during the designated time period for which they are scheduled. This may required conducting media calls, coordinating communication with other disaster volunteers or staff, going to a disaster scene or responding to a disaster drill.
- On-call volunteers should be prepared to respond to late-night or early-morning disasters. If all volunteers cannot be reached by phone, he or she should carry a pager or cell phone and return all calls/pages as soon as possible.
- Any volunteer who cannot be available during his or her scheduled on-call time period should contact a member of the Public Relations Department to arrange replacement coverage.
- On-call public affairs volunteers respond to disasters that occur within the following five county area: Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery.
- Involves on-call capabilities, during non-traditional business hours (evenings and weekends).
- Standing/sitting for long periods
- Multi-tasking: must handle multiple requests, follow procedures and demonstrate ability to reason.
- Ability to handle initial media scrutiny (print and broadcast).

Qualifications |
- One year plus public affairs/relations experience and/or training equivalent.
- Ability to write, take notes and photographic skills preferred.
- Ability to manage many tasks demands at one time.
- Ability to deal with print and broadcast media.
