Red Cross Responds:

Flooding Forced Families from Homes

On Wednesday, June 28th, rain soaked our region. As floodwaters wreaked havoc throughout the Northeastern United States, covering homes, washing away cars and displacing thousands of residents, SEPA stepped into action to provide relief.

Flood victims began the first steps toward rebuilding their homes and lives with the help of 132 dedicated Red Cross volunteers and staff members. Our chapter opened five shelters throughout the flooded areas. Right here in Southeastern Pennsylvania, we served 1,892 meals and 1,684 snacks, distributed 686 clean-up kits and 154 comfort kits over the course of three weeks.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter responded across the state of Pennsylvania meeting the emergency needs of its residents in a big way. Wherever the need was greatest, SEPA was there, staffing the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency desk during the first week of flooding, and shipping more than 900 cots and relief supplies throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Helping to defer the $2.4 million statewide relief effort, long-time supporter Pew Charitable Trusts generously donated $1 million for flood relief throughout the state.
