eNews from Southeastern Pennsylvania

Dear Friend of the American Red Cross:

So often the Red Cross is called to respond to home fires – 67,000 times last year, 827 right here in Southeastern Pennsylvania. These disasters rarely make the headlines. No one thinks that it will happen to them.

It is only with your support that we are able to answer these 827 calls for help, one family at a time, whenever and wherever disaster strikes. As we gear up for the upcoming heating season, we do so with a simple message – install smoke alarms and replace the batteries. This message has provided lifesaving results, and we hope that it continues to save lives in our community.

Every time we respond to an emergency I am reminded of the power of people helping people. After 30 years of working with volunteers, I continue to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who contribute time and resources to this organization (8,377 last year), and by the compassion and quality of skills that they bring to the good work of helping others.

This September, we honored some of these people at our annual Celebration of Volunteers. Our very own David Cohen, an 18-year Red Cross volunteer, won the Betty Robinson Award, the top volunteer award given by SEPA. On this same night, we thanked John Carrow for his dedicated service to our chapter as he passed the chairman’s gavel to Harry McHugh, the force behind Wawa’s terrific partnership with the Red Cross. Also recognized with top awards were Valerie Ferguson, patron of Red Cross House; Bettyann and Jack Creighton, who have done so much to help Philadelphia school children learn lifesaving skills; and Karol Wasylyshyn, the extraordinary chair of our Spectrum event for the past nine years.

With solid leadership from our board and the dedication of our supporters, we are ready for a new year of service to our community - responding to disasters, training our youth, connecting loved ones overseas, and preparing others to save lives.

Friends like you make the Red Cross a place where people look after each other, even when they do not know one another. This holiday season, and every day, we thank you for continuing to give the gifts of your time, your money and your blood.

All the Best,

Tom Foley

Prevent Fires. Save Lives.

Are You ReadyEvery 79 minutes, a fire affects someone’s life. With all the attention on large-scale disasters, 4 out 5 Americans don’t realize the most common disaster threat is not a hurricane or a flood—it’s a home fire.
