Volunteerism Runs in the Family

Long time volunteers, Bettyann and Jack Creighton are inspirations to the Red Cross.

At the age of 16, Jack influenced by his mother’s service as a Red Cross Gray Lady, joined the Red Cross as a lifeguard. Following in his mother’s footsteps Jack strengthened his involvement as a Water Safety Instructor and an Instructor Trainer.

Bettyann teamed up with her husband as CPR instructors at CPR Saturday, where 13-to- 24-year-olds are trained in CPR. It is through the efforts of people like the Creightons that thousands of people have been trained in Red Cross programs. Their children also join them responding to disasters and standing ready to save a life as a trained lifeguard.

It was not surprising when, Bettyann and Jack became instrumental in helping to build and sustain the Red Cross Club program. “When I see the kids participate in the Red Cross Clubs they just blossom”, said Bettyann. “It’s amazing how shy kids can become a part of the Red Cross Clubs, and then confidently they can get up in front of their peers to teach HIV and STD prevention education and feel very comfortable with the material. That’s a huge step. This program has helped our kids and teachers become more sensitized to the Red Cross and the skills from the Red Cross.”

Their legacy does not end here; this is a family that continues to give back to its community through their time and their treasures. When asked why they chose the Red Cross the Creighton’s said, “The Red Cross is our favorite charity. It’s very reputable, and we knew our money would always go to the right place. We are in awe of the work that all of the Red Cross volunteers and staff do. We consider them our angels on earth.”
