A Typical Red Cross Day

Every minute of every day your Red Cross is there delivering help and hope throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. These moments have been captured from actual occurrences during an average day at the SEPA Chapter.

8:00 am 20 students begin their first day of a nurse assistant training course at the Red Cross House. Instructors Ivan Lytle and Betty Johnson provide the skills, theory and professionalism needed to provide quality nursing care.

8:15 am Ten people begin a half-day Red Cross CPR and AED course at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP in Philadelphia, taught by instructor Sunil Chowdhari. Just one of 32 lifesaving courses taught during an average week throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.

8:30 am Caseworker Sibongile Sithole, meets with a family at the Red Cross House after a fire engulfed their home. Throughout their stay she provides assistance for their recovery.

9:00 am Fire breaks out on Walnut Street in Morton, Pa. The Red Cross Delaware County Disaster Action Team (DAT) provides assistance. (con’t. on page 3)

10:00 am The Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) Call Center receives an emergency communication for an officer deployed oversees. They contact the officer via his unit to let him know that he is the father of a baby girl.

11:00 am Pennsburg Assisted Living Home is engulfed in flames. The Red Cross Eastern Montgomery County DAT immediately responds to providing residents with comfort and aid.

11:30 am 12 Red Cross club members begin a CPR course at the Philadelphia Military Academy. Just one of 18 Red Cross Clubs trained in CPR this year.

11:45 am The AFES call center receives a call from the spouse of an officer stationed in Guantanamo Bay in need of an Army Emergency Relief loan.

12:00 pm The Public Support committee meets to review the Chapter’s fundraising and communications. Just one of nine committees, which, along with our board of directors volunteers their expertise to guide our chapter.

1:00 pm Five volunteers support a blood drive at the West Chester Blood Donor Center. Just one of 50 blood drives supported in an average week.

2:00 pm Lawrence Charleston installs a Lifeline unit at a senior citizens home so she can continue to live safely and independently. Just one of about 45 calls responded to each week in the five counties we serve.

2:45 pm 12 Red Cross club members of Edison High School begin HIV Prevention Education training. At the end of the training students develop presentations to teach their peers.

4:30 pm 50 people attend evening programs at the Red Cross House, including school tutoring, art therapy, emotional care groups, and fire safety seminars.

6:00 pm 11 volunteers begin an orientation course facilitated by Sharon Jefferson. This is just one of five orientations that occur each month.
