Greetings,

Not quite two months after being named President and CEO of the national American Red Cross, Mark W. Everson traveled to Philadelphia last week to visit SEPA Chapter. In this month's newsletter, we'll bring you full coverage of his visit.

The new Red Cross leader clearly understands what makes the Red Cross work since one of the key events in his packed agenda was a meeting with chapter volunteers. They are the people who made it possible for us to respond to 905 disasters in the past year and make it possible for us to promise the nearly four million people in Southeastern Pennsylvania that we'll be there before, during and after disaster strikes, helping them prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster.

Thank you for all you do for the American Red Cross, and we look forward to working with you in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Tom Foley
Chief Executive Officer

Red Cross Says Stay Safe During Summer Heat

Although farmers and other rural workers who toil outdoors would seem to be at greatest risk, most heat-related deaths occur in cities. The 1995 Chicago heat wave, which led to the deaths of approximately 600 people over a five-day period, proved to be one of the worst weather-related disasters in U.S. history. We already had at least one confirmed heat-related death in our area this summer, and the worst of the heat is still around the corner.
