Greetings,
"An individual has not started living until he can rise
above the narrow confines of his individualistic
concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity,"
said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Without a doubt, Dr. King would be heartened by the great work of our Red Cross staff and volunteers, who were out in force to serve humanity this past month. Whether responding to an overnight fire, enduring sub-zero temperatures to show solidarity with a community mourning the loss of two children, or working with students to spread the preparedness message on the day of service dedicated to Dr. King, our Red Cross workers distinguished themselves time and again.
In January, 90 staff and volunteers helped our
Emergency
Services team respond to 87 disasters, providing
comfort and Red Cross relief to 392 people.
Thanks to all of you who have, in Dr. King's
words, "started living" and lend your support to the
Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Sincerely,

Chief Executive Officer

Senior Director Emergency Services

SEPA Chapter Update
Last Tuesday, about 40 volunteers gathered to listen
to Dr. John Pryor, medical advisor to our Chapter
Emergency Services department, who recently
returned from a four-month tour as a front-line
surgeon in the War in Iraq -- and is now back at the
operating tables at Penn in what he calls the "War in
Philadelphia." Dr. Pryor, the son of a long time Red
Cross volunteer from upstate New York, argues his
case-that violence against citizens in Philadelphia is
eerily similar to the violence against Americans in
Iraq --convincingly.

AmeriCorps Marks MLK Day with Fire Safety Project
On Monday, January 21, 2008, ARC SEPA’s AmeriCorps members participated in Radnor Middle School’s Martin Luther King Day event with students who celebrated their day off from school with a “day on” of service. The event brought nearly 200 volunteers -- students, parents, and teachers -- out to the school for a variety of community service events; some 40 students chose to work with AmeriCorps members making fire safety walkthrough bags and learning about fire safety.

One Red Cross Volunteer's Perspective on War at Home and Abroad
Dr. John Pryor, a trauma surgeon at the University of
Pennsylvania and a proud Red Cross volunteer,
captivated a crowd of fellow Red Cross and VOAD
volunteers with a wide-ranging presentation on war at
home and abroad.
Dr. Pryor took a leave from UPenn, where he is the
Trauma Program Director for the Trauma Center at
Penn, to serve an active duty tour as the trauma
surgeon for the 344th Combat Support Hospital in Abu
Ghraib, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006.

They have provided information about Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) services to the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force recruiters in the five-county region. Our goal is to reach each unit at least once a year.
