Greetings,

It pays to prepare.

That's the lesson we teach at the Red Cross every day, and it's the message that Governor Tom Ridge, the nation's first Secretary of Homeland Security, brought with him when he sat down with ARC SEPA leaders recently.

Governor Ridge praised the work of SEPA Chapter during his visit, recognizing our relationships with key regional partners and the fine work of our staff and volunteers. That fine work was on display over the Memorial Day weekend as we responded to 18 fires. So far in the month of May, you helped us respond to 83 disasters, bringing emergency relief to 241 families when they needed it most.

As always, we thank you for your service and wish you a safe and disaster-free summer.

Sincerely,

Tom Foley
Chief Executive Officer

Governor Ridge Addresses SEPA Chairman's Cabinet

First Homeland Security chief urges disaster preparedness
Tom Ridge

Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge came to Philadelphia and spent time at the SEPA Chairman's Cabinet talking about key preparedness issues with our senior leadership team. Following that roundtable discussion, Ridge keynoted a 400 businessperson Preparedness Summit co-engineered by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber and this Chapter on Friday, May 11.

A Note from Tom Foley

An update on the activities at SEPA Chapter

We just finished an extraordinary Memorial Day weekend with:

  • Our emergency services staff and volunteers out caring for 79 people (22 of them children) late Friday night and all day Saturday after a Strawberry Mansion-area fire (just one of the 12 fires to which we responded in the first 36 hours of the Memorial Day weekend),
  • 64 blood volunteers on hand over the weekend to help with 12 bloodmobiles, which together generated over 1200 pints of blood and,
  • Two Red Cross testimonial op-eds in seven different local papers (Celebrating Red Cross Month & Celebrating National Volunteer Week).
The work of the Red Cross never stops, and we are grateful for your help in making that possible.

City Disaster Action Teams Seek Volunteers

In search of new DAT members to bolster the ranks
