Greetings,
It pays to prepare.
That's the lesson we teach at the Red Cross every day, and it's the message that Governor Tom Ridge, the nation's first Secretary of Homeland Security, brought with him when he sat down with ARC SEPA leaders recently.
Governor Ridge praised the work of SEPA Chapter during his visit, recognizing our relationships with key regional partners and the fine work of our staff and volunteers. That fine work was on display over the Memorial Day weekend as we responded to 18 fires. So far in the month of May, you helped us respond to 83 disasters, bringing emergency relief to 241 families when they needed it most.
As always, we thank you for your service and wish you a safe and disaster-free summer.
Sincerely,

Chief Executive Officer

Senior Director Emergency Services

A Note from Tom Foley

An update on the activities at SEPA Chapter
We just finished an extraordinary Memorial Day
weekend with:
- Our emergency services staff and volunteers out
caring for 79 people (22 of them children) late Friday
night and all day Saturday after a Strawberry Mansion-area fire (just one of the 12 fires to which we
responded in the first 36 hours of the Memorial Day
weekend),
- 64 blood volunteers on hand over the weekend to
help with 12 bloodmobiles, which together generated
over 1200 pints of blood and,
- Two Red Cross testimonial op-eds in seven
different local papers (Celebrating Red Cross Month &
Celebrating National Volunteer Week).
The work of the Red Cross never stops, and we are
grateful for your help in making that possible.

City Disaster Action Teams Seek Volunteers
|
|
In search of new DAT members to bolster the ranks
Fire season, the name once reserved for the cold
weather months, clearly knows no time limits in
Philadelphia as we have seen this spring. The
number and magnitude of fires have put our city
Disaster Action Teams (DAT) to the test. As a result,
we're taking all possible steps to increase our DAT
membership.

Client Casework Guidelines

For DAT responders, a review
In an effort to comply with national guidelines and
follow appropriate policy and procedure, we are
asking you to assist us in maintaining the high
standards that ARC SEPA has come to expect from its
staff and volunteers.

Become more involved in logistics, mass care or disaster assessment
The Emergency Services department is looking for
people to develop their skills in either logistics, mass
care or disaster assessment. As part of a new
initiative, ES is developing three teams to focus on
these three key areas, particularly geared towards
response to a large disaster.

Denise Graf shares a memorable disaster response experience
Growing up understanding the importance of
volunteering, I wanted a constant volunteer opportunity
and found it at the American Red Cross in 2005. My
first experience with the Red Cross was at training,
and it was there that I signed up to become a
volunteer.
