Greetings,

It’s been another busy month – 75 emergency responses in October – for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter and all our terrific volunteers who do so much to help disaster victims.

As we gear up for the upcoming heating season, we do so with a simple message – install smoke alarms and put in fresh batteries when you change your clocks twice a year. We enclose a copy of the essay sent to all local newspapers for our volunteers to read, and pass on tips to family, friends and neighbors.

This message has worked in years past. Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers observed that annual fatalities in fires have decreased from 46 to 19, perhaps because people are heeding the warning to save lives with smoke alarms. Our chapter has seen similar results.

Thanks again for all that you do. Our 8,377 volunteers in Southeastern Pennsylvania truly make this chapter someplace special.

Fire Safety

A little knowledge protects your family from fire

As the weather grows colder, it’s time to make sure your home is safe for the upcoming heating season.

Fire Prevention Month

Red Cross reaches 3,800 in community walkthroughs

Fires are the #1 disaster in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. And unlike other disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes, fires are preventable. Fires were the cause of 94% of the 876 SEPA disaster responses from July 2005 to June 2006.

The Year in Numbers: the FOCIS Report

SEPA training and disaster response numbers up

In early August every year, this chapter submits its FOCIS report, a fiscal year compilation of quantitative measurements required of all 800 plus Red Cross chapters in America.

SEPA Prepares

11,000 can be sheltered in case of emergency with new additions of vehicles and supplies

Thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Southeastern Counter-Terrorism Task Force, SEPA Chapter now owns two new Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs), 7,000 more cots, blankets and comfort kits, 10,000 pillows and four 16-foot trailers to be stocked with cleanup kits.

ES leads effort to strengthen SEPA preparedness and build capacity to respond to disasters

Disaster knows no boundaries. A hurricane hits or a tornado touches down and suddenly a community that was thriving just minutes before is devastated. Responding to disasters initially involves the response of the local Red Cross chapters and its Disaster Action Teams. However, during a large disaster, the efforts of local disaster volunteers are often overwhelmed by the destruction and the number of people affected.

One volunteer remembers his role in the Pennsylvania response to 9/11

When most people think of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, New York and Washington come most readily to mind. But one of the four planes that were hijacked went down in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Ron Warriner was the only volunteer from ARC SEPA to respond to the disaster scene.
