Step 2: Plan for Evacuation
Listen to the advice of local authorities. If told to evacuate immediately, do so immediately. If the disaster is affecting your home or apartment, do not wait --get out as soon as possible. Never go back inside during a fire or flood.
-
Establish a meeting place
One gathering place should be directly outside your home. Make sure all family members know to meet there. Second, find an out of town place- a family member's home, a friend's apartment or even a hotel. Know the route and have a map, just in case. -
Getting Out of your Home
Identify two ways to exit every room in the house or apartment. Determine which family members will assist a small child or disabled family member. That way everyone else knows to leave the house immediately. -
Getting out of Town
Listen to the advice of local authorities (fire, police, emergency management). Listen to a battery powered radio for the location of emergency shelters. Only use approved travel routes. -
Grab your Kit
Have your disaster supplies kit handy. Make sure it is easy to carry. -
Suit Up
Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes. Layer clothing for temperature extremes. -

Shelter In-Place
Shelter in Place means to stay indoors. When there is a release of hazardous chemicals into the air, it means that air outside may contain toxins or poisonous substances that may make you sick. Inside your home or office you have clean air to breathe, but you must make sure that the harmful air doesn't get in.
Here are some helpful tips:
- Shut all windows and doors. Cover cracks along doors and windows with tape, wet rags or towels.
- Go to the room with the fewest number of doors and windows.
- Bring your Disaster Supply Kit.
- Turn off all heating and cooling systems such as aid conditioners and window and exhaust fans.
- Listen to local radio for instructions.
- Keep your pets with you.
- If you are disabled or need medical attention, call 911 to let the police and fire departments know you need special help.
- You may be told to cover your mouth or nose with a wet cloth or handkerchief, so make sure you have one in your supply kit.
Prepare now: Keep duct tape, a portable radio, flashlights and a fresh supply of batteries in our shelter in-place space.
