Red Cross Clubs
Red Cross Clubs provide after-school opportunities that empower students with life-saving skills and knowledge, enabling them to educate their peers and experience contributing to their schools and communities.
This program began in September 2003 at ten high schools in the School District of Philadelphia, aiming to galvanize a core group of 10 to 15 students per school to become leaders, instructors and resources in their schools and communities.
Through meetings generally after-school, club members learn Red Cross trainings, including HIV prevention, Disaster Preparedness, First Aid and CPR, and International Humanitarian Law.
With support from Red Cross staff and Teacher Sponsors, members are encouraged and guided to develop and share their knowledge and skills with peers, other youth, family, and community members through a variety of activities, including “Red Cross Days”, service projects, and other events during the school year and summer.
The Red Cross Clubs also assist youth with developing critical negotiation skills, meeting service-learning requirements, increasing awareness of post-secondary education options, and exploring career opportunities.
